There is a lot of negativity in the world, and that’s really dangerous,” said Kelly Brown, who competed at the event.
“If we can start bringing people together in a positive way, that is a really good thing.”
“I was so proud to be here,” said Amy Lee, a member of The American Girls Gym.
“I want to show everyone how much we appreciate the girls, and how proud we are of them.”
The American girls gymnastics team is part of The International Gymnastics Federation, a governing body for international competition, and they won the bronze medal in the 2018 London Olympics.
“We have been there, done that, and will do that again,” Lee said.
“This was really special.”
In the post, the gym noted the importance of diversity and inclusion, including in the field of fitness.
“To be part the #AmericanGirlGirlGem is to be a part of something that is so much bigger than you and me, and it is to show that we can all work together to make the world a better place,” the post read.
“Thank you for your support.”
In a statement, the U.S. Olympic Committee said it was “deeply saddened” by the events and the comments made in the post.
“The U.A.G. is committed to diversity, inclusion and mutual respect, and the IOC strongly condemns this type of behavior,” the statement read.
The American Gym posted on its Instagram page that it was open to all teams and athletes, including women.
“As the sport’s premier female-led gymnastics program, we will continue to work with our team to develop our own unique style and look,” the organization said.
